Introduction

Most Northern Ireland households (68%) are dependent on using oil boilers as their main heat source. The cheapest way to buy oil is in bulk deliveries, such as 900 litres, because smaller quantities of oil cost more per litre for delivery. Some households are finding it increasingly difficult to budget for large one-off bulk deliveries of oil and may have no option but to buy smaller, more expensive quantities.
But there is a way to get around this. By joining a local oil buying club, which are designed to help consumers to reduce their costs by purchasing their oil orders in bulk as part of a group. By combining orders, club members can negotiate a lower price per litre than by ordering alone. The Housing Executive has appointed Bryson Energy to establish a network of oil buying clubs across Northern Ireland. Groups interested in setting up an oil buying club should contact Bryson Energy on 0800 142 2865 or via e-mail at This email address is being protected from spambots. How it works:

  1. Members place their order with a community co-ordinator. Members might email, text or phone their order by a specified date or leave an order form in an order box at a chosen venue i.e. the Post Office, local shop or library. Some larger groups order oil on a specified date each month.
  2. Oil suppliers are then contacted by the co-ordinator to negotiate the best price for the bulk order.
  3. Members are then advised of the discounted cost per litre and proposed delivery date. At this point they must confirm their order and commit to it.
  4. Members may pay on delivery or they may have paid in advance, depending on any Terms and Conditions established for the group or club.

Benefits of an Oil Buying Club

  • Save money - members benefit from a reduction in price per litre with the larger volume order.
  • Supplier saves on delivery costs.
  • Fewer vehicle movements.
  • Reduction in CO2 emissions - fewer deliveries reduces the number of tanker journeys – safer for the community and better for the environment.
  • Social cohesion and sense of community spirit.
  • Avoid buying small, expensive ‘emergency 20 litre oil drums’ which cost significantly more per litre than a distributor might charge.
